Allamej: A Symbolic Place for Everyone

Allamej: A Place for Everyone

Allamej is a hybrid language constructed by Rodrigo Solano as a representation of human diversity coexistence through the conciousness of hybridization.

Specialists say humans are symbolic beings. They are born to their languages and become subordinated to whatever they learn through them. They become attached to their language content as part of their inner beings, EGO, and emotionally alienated from reality which includes: Humans are diversified and are often exposed to their cultural differences. Language then is this very symbolic place where humans are segregated. Allamej is a symbolic place aiming to instigate individuals to reflect about their attitudes in relation to culture diversity.

A Mix of languages

We use language to think, produce and depict meanings. Allamej  (also Allamese or Alamês) is a hybrid language constructed by Solano based on multiple spoken languages of the world, mostly based on language families like: Bantu,  Germanic, Greek, Indic, Japanese, Latin, Malay, Persian, Quechua, Semitic, Sino-Tibetan, Slavonic, Thai, Turkic, Tupian, Yoruba and other contributions. This mix intends to  represent coexistence of people diversity by producing words based on different cultures and adding them to format a language. For these words to be combatible one with another, meanings have to be reflected sometimes just as our cohexistence as humans. "Truth", "God" and "Reality" are examples of challenging words when we live segregated in different languages, different cultures. Would it be possible to review concepts in order to accept the reallity of people diversity?

A Symbolic Intercultural place

The inspiration for Allamej was at first Esperanto. But both the European base concentration of Esperanto origins and language creation purposes were differed since the beginning. As a suburban Brazilian mestiço, Solano created Allamej in a way that reflected what he could notice in himself and in the local hybrid culture, commonly found in Latin America but both ethnically and culturally embodies far more than just Latin-Based languages, but a mix of several peoples from different regions. Allamej was not a language to be spoken at first then, but to produce culture questioning.

Recognizing the world as hybrid

From this perspective, Allamej comes up with the notion that hybridization is not only a Latin American feature, but a  Historical human process happening globally with the interaction of different people for different purposes, and among them trading goods and acquiring knowledge. History tells us that Empires had relations with each other and included within them a great number of different ethnic grups and cultures. The exchange of goods and knoledge may serve as example of intercultuaral productions. Beer was probably first developed in the Middle East and now is famous in many countries just as potato is originally fom the Americas and is now part of many European traditional cuisines. Phoenician writing system gave rise to Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Latin and many other alphabets representing a turning point in human development. Actually it is very hard for one to look at anything around that had abslotly no influence from other cultures. Therefore, interculturality means progress. That way, Allamej productions aim to respect contributions of every people, tribe or civilization to humanity, bringing them together a symbolism which is in the opposite side of supremacist or segregation primitive instincts.

Structure

Allamej is built up by importing words from different languages and adapting their shape and written form to the Allamej structure, just like adding blocks to build a diversified village. In the image bellow you may have an idea how Allamej meanings are built.

If you are not a language expert, the illustration just shows that words are imported from languages spoken in different cultures and modified in a way to be accommodated into Allamej structure which is quite regular: each syllable has a predictable format that points to a meaning that adding up to others syllables make more and more words. See the examples:

  • 1. Tup comes from Tupi, the classical indigenous Brazilian language – “Tupã” used to mean a God. In Allamej it is adapted to “tup” and means “nature”.
  • 2. Ved comes from Sanskrit word वेद, “veda” , the classical language of Northern India in which most of the ancient philosophical texts were written, including cosmology and subjects close to well-being and psychology.
  • 3. The two words together form “tupved” which means “science”.

And that’s the way words are constructed and make new logical senses. That way of building meaning is common in many languages such as: Chinese, German, Tupi and Turkish. But in Allamej words are inspired in different languages, cultures and meanings.

Script

Allamej has its own alphabet which also has hybrid origins and may be represented in ways reminding cursive scripts like Arabic, old Latin or Cyrillic and Mongolian for example. Coincidentally hybridized people are highly found both in Latin America and in the Muslim world. It also happens in other cultures, sometimes more prominently, sometimes less. As examples we may see the roots used to build the word “diversity” above first in standard Allamej alphabets and then in stylized ways to remind their origins.

Colors

Inspired by some of the elements that instigated interactions between different peoples, sometimes provoking bad consequences, but many times mixing peoples and cultures Allamej is usually portrayed along with images in seven different colors representing those items. The color diversity standing alongside is also inspired in the so called "Fitas do Nosso Senhor do Bonfin" a symble of Bahia, where the Portuguese are believed to have first arrived in Brazil. They are seven, an important number in several cultures.

Silver White: Representing the wealth that motivated international trade.

Sea Green-Blue : Reminding us of the seas which have become commercial routes

❸ Nature Green: Reminding us of the original natural resources in every region of the planet and sustainability.

❹ Gold and Sand Yellow :  Recognizing deserts that linked the West to the East on the silk road and Africa to the Mediterranean and to the Middle East many times .

Spicy Orange: Alluding to the masala, which is a mix of spices, that motivated the logistical and intercultural development of nations.

❻ Brazilian Wood and Royal Red: Giving evidence to India cinnamon and brazilwood that were part of long journeys that integrated peoples.

Skin Black: The last color and the highest number. Honor of the diverse non-white populations that have become part of international culture.

Productions

Whatever is produced in or throughout Allamej reflects interculturality, peace, union, and intends to instigate self-questioning by exploring our own beliefs and values. It may instigate the perception that almost everything that segregates humanity comes somehow out of language and its productions: frontiers, skin color connotation, prejudice, the name of God, the "we and them" mindset, when "them" are usually the others, strangers, barbarians or enemies ... At the same time Allamej conserves origins, respects diversity and is open to new concepts.
